Ashley Bryan was an American writer and illustrator of children’s books who wrote frequently about the African-American experience. When he retired from teaching at Dartmouth College in the 1980s, he moved to Maine’s Cranberry Isles. Beautiful Blackbird is one of Ashley’s most beloved books, a story of tolerance, community, and inclusion. On this day, we’ll be celebrating his work through writing and art projects inspired by Ashley’s style and subject matter.
In the morning we will:
Read and discuss Beautiful Blackbird and Freedom Over Me
Participate in interactive writing activities based on the books
Freedom Over Me is a powerful picture book that contrasts the monetary value of a slave with the priceless value of life experiences and dreams that a slave owner could never take away. Note: This experience is designed for learners in grades 4-8
In the afternoon we will create works of art inspired the style of Ashley Bryan.
What to bring: Bag lunch, snacks, water bottle, appropriate clothing and gear for the weather and your curiosity
